Claiming to be the world's largest travel website, TripAdvisor is a website that combines user reviews with links to hotel and flight bookings pages. Since it began operations in early 2000, the site has expanded to more than 30 other countries including to Canada, China, Brazil, Turkey and Australia. Many of the discount codes for TripAdvisor relate to savings on hotel bookings.
Aside from the main website, TripAdvisor now operates a host of other travel brands online including BookingBuddy, Cruise Critic and Holiday Watchdog, almost all of which operate a similar user-generated content model. Discount codes are only redeemable through the main TripAdvisor site.
Holidaymakers write reviews following stays in hotels or trips to certain areas for reference by other travellers, thereby generating the content for the website free of charge. This is a model designed to reduce costs, offer honest content and generate new content all the time so that TripAdvisior is always growing.
The website sees over 50 million users per month and there are now more than 60 million reviews and opinions. The site also allows users to compare hotel prices in order to get the best rates. These can sometimes be reduced further by using a TripAdvisor discount voucher.
At the end of 2011, TripAdvisor was finally spun off from Expedia and listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange in New York. Before this time the two travel websites were operated under InterActive Corporation.
